How does solar EV charging work?

Put more of your daytime solar generation into your daily drive. The right system balances your home, your vehicle and the energy available.

ONE IDEA. THREE SIMPLE STEPS.

How it comes together.

  1. 01

    Generate

Your solar system produces electricity during daylight.

  2. 02

    Measure

Compatible metering identifies energy available for charging.

  3. 03

    Charge

The charger adapts within the vehicle and system limits.

CHAPTER 01

Solar generation is not the same as solar surplus

Your home may already be using part of the electricity generated by your panels. Solar-surplus charging aims to use the energy left over after other demand. Generation changes with daylight and weather, so charging speed can change too.

CHAPTER 02

Solar-only or solar plus grid?

  • Surplus-only modes may wait or pause when there is not enough solar energy to begin or sustain charging.
  • Mixed modes can supplement available solar energy with grid electricity.
  • Mode names, thresholds and supported combinations vary by charger model and firmware.

For example, Wallbox describes Eco and Full Green modes with different approaches to grid supplementation. Treat that as a manufacturer example—not a promise that every charger offers the same modes.

CHAPTER 03

What needs to work together?

A useful brief for your installer

  • Exact vehicle model, inlet and supported AC charging power.
  • Charger model and documented solar-control capability.
  • Inverter model and whether the supply is single- or three-phase.
  • Compatible meter or sensors and their communication requirements.
  • Whether a battery, backup supply or other energy controls are present.

CHAPTER 04

Plan around your real routine

If your car is usually away during daylight, compare a daytime charging plan with your actual parking schedule. Record how much energy you need between trips rather than choosing only by the largest charger rating.

GOOD QUESTIONS. CLEAR ANSWERS.

Before you choose.

Can I charge at night using solar?

Panels do not generate solar electricity at night. Charging then requires grid electricity or a suitably designed storage system. A solar-ready charger does not itself provide energy storage.

Will every charger work with my existing inverter?

Do not assume so. Ask the supplier to confirm the charger, meter, inverter arrangement and supported control modes as a complete system.

Does solar charging work during a power cut?

That depends on the inverter, backup capability and installation design. Have a qualified installer assess it; do not assume solar panels alone provide charging during an outage.
